Programs for Latino Elementary School Students

Elementary school programsElementary school children in Nuestro Center’s Homework Club work daily with skilled staff and volunteers to achieve grade-level standards in math and reading.

School-Year Program

Nuestro Center’s Homework Club serves students at Oak Terrace Elementary School, helping children below grade level standards to improve in English Language Arts and Mathematics. Our staff and trained volunteer tutors work with students after school to ensure that they understand and complete their homework, collaborating closely with teachers and parents. Students achieve improved attendance and homework completion.

Our team supports students' social-emotional development, a critical cornerstone of child development. Field trips and art/cultural activities are offered on Fridays and days off to provide enrichment experiences and to broaden awareness of the opportunities for bright futures.

Summer Program

A five-week Nuestro Verano summer camp extends the objectives of the school year with educational and recreational activities and field trips. Children engage in camp experiences that are otherwise inaccessible to them.

Daily programs include team building to encourage cooperation, patience, and communication. Fun activities in math and reading help campers keep up their academic gains from the school year. Art, movement, and music programming offers opportunities for self-expression and learning about Latino and other cultures. Field trips offer visits to nearby and Chicago cultural and recreational sites. Children receive a healthy meal every day at the beginning of the program.

Parent workshops during camp provide parents with tools to support their child’s emotional growth and well-being.

Nuestro Center Homework Club serves not only as a source of academic support, but also moral support. It is a positive place and a safe haven for our Latino children.
