Grandparents Raising Grandchildren

Caregiver Resource Center  Family Service, through the Relatives Raising Children (RRC) program, was contacted to assist a 63-year old disabled veteran living in Waukegan and raising his grandson. Frank has served as guardian for his 13-year-old grandson for the past six years.  Frank has a pacemaker and congestive heart failure, is a diabetic, and uses a wheelchair. He lives on a monthly disability check plus financial assistance for his grandson, and the VA provides Frank’s medical care. He is physically unable to work, and his grandson is too young to work.

Through the RRC program, Family Service was able to assist this family by purchasing a much-needed dryer, locating a local vision store to provide Frank with prescription glasses at no charge, and making the initial contact with Prairie State Legal Services to help Frank begin the process to adopt his grandson.

Frank and his grandson were among the 1,064 individuals and families helped last year by the Caregiver Resource Center.
